Jail Sergeant

Salary: $70,458-annually

The Shift Commander (Sergeant) performs inmate supervision duties in compliance with the Board of Corrections Standards for Jails, policies and procedures established by the Southside Regional Jail Authority and written Post Orders.  The Sergeant assists with personnel and inmate matters and may act as Officer in Charge in absence of the higher ranking officers.  This position is designated as essential personnel, and required to work, regardless of adverse weather conditions. 
Typical Tasks (Include, but not limited to):

Performs required duties of a Regional Jail Officer when needed;
Directs the activities of inmates in controlled and uncontrolled environment;
Monitors inmate compliance with facility rules;
Performs all required inmate and facility checks in determining compliance with State Standards and documents such activity in the Logs;
Performs all required inmate and facility checks in compliance with Southside Regional Jail  Policies and Procedures, as well as Post Orders;
Completes Performance Evaluations of subordinates;
Disciplines employees, as needed, following Southside Regional Jail Authority Policies and Procedures;
Conducts ongoing training of shift personnel;
Acts as Officer in Charge;
Assists in checking all security equipment and devices daily and verifies they are in good operating order, records checks and reports any maintenance problem detected;
Assists in shakedowns/searches of inmates and Southside Regional Jail Authority property;
Investigates any unusual incidents at the jail and reports the results in writing;
Reviews jail logbooks and records to ensure accuracy;
Ensures the facility is kept clean and orderly;
Supervises inmate meals, recreational and work activities;
Ensures that jail staff adheres to Southside Regional Jail Authority Policies and Procedures;
Performs Intake/Booking functions;

Transports inmates, as needed or assigned;
Writes reports concerning inmate behavior or other facility functions;
Investigates rule and/or criminal infractions and takes appropriate action(s) to include sanctions and criminal charges;
Cooperates with other Law Enforcement Personnel; 
Any other duties that may be assigned by higher authority.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of local jail facility operations and standards;
Must possess a working knowledge of the criminal justice system;
Thorough knowledge of inmate behavior;
Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions and/or memorandums from Administration, Medical or any other higher authority;
Ability to handle any post in the facility, as needed;
Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining appropriate behavior;

Able to physically perform all job requirements without assistance or special accommodation;
Ability to perform required assignments with minimum supervision.
Ability to supervise and direct the personnel and activities of the jail on the assigned shift.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent;
Required to be a certified jail officer within one (1) year of beginning employment;
Must possess a driver’s license valid in Virginia.
Special Requirements:
Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older;
Must be a United States citizen;
Must maintain certification in all Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) mandated training as a jail officer in the state of Virginia;
Must maintain an operational telephone for emergency contact;
Must be able to respond in a timely manner during emergencies to the Southside Regional Jail facility;
No prior convictions or pending criminal charges.

Employment with Southside Regional Jail

• Security Staff must be 18 years of age, and must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  
• Entry Level/ Uncertified Officer starting salary is $51,214.
  
• Certification Training paid by Southside Regional Jail
  
• There are rotating Day and Night Shifts. Work Schedule - 12 hour shifts
  
• 13 workdays and 1 paid Holiday per 28 day cycle.
  
• Annual leave and Sick leave accrued at 12 hours for each 28 day cycle.
  
• Paid employee health insurance; dependent coverage available at employee's expense.
  
• Retirement provided through Virginia Retirement System (VRS) with Law Enforcement Officers Supplement (LEOS). Employees are required to pay 5% of their monthly salary towards VRS retirement, Southside Regional Jail pays the rest.
  
• A physical exam is required on all new employees. Pre-employment drug testing is required with random drug testing throughout employment.
  
• Criminal Records and Driver's License Records will be checked on all new employees. All employees must have and maintain a valid Driver's license.
  
• All Southside Regional Jail employees must have and maintain a working telephone. A cellular telephone satisfies this requirement.
