Captain/ Chief of Security

Starting Salary is $83,445 Annually

The Southside Regional Jail is accepting applications for Captain (Chief of Security). The Chief of Security is responsible for the overall security of the facility. Applications can be submitted in person or online at www.southsideregionaljail.org.  

The minimum qualifications to be considered for this position are:

-Must have minimum of three (3) years experience at a supervisory level;

- A high school education with a strong commitment to professional development as evidenced by occupational training and/or college coursework;

-Progressive supervisory corrections experience to include significant experience as a Shift Commander in an adult facility;

-Must possess a valid driver's license to drive in the state of Virginia.

Sergeant
Starting Salary is $66,374 Annually
The Sergeant acts as the Shift Commander and performs inmate supervision duties in compliance with the BOC Standards, policy and procedure and post orders as established by the SRJA. The Sergeant assists with personnel and inmate matters. The position is designated as essential personnel, and required to work, regardless of adverse weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
-High School diploma or equivalent, Certified Jail Officer with at least 1 year experience, valid Virginia driver’s license, must be 21 years of age or older, must be a United States citizen, must maintain DCJS certification as a jail Officer in the state of Virginia.

Employment with Southside Regional Jail


  • Security Staff must be 18 years of age, and must possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Entry Level/ Uncertified Officer starting salary is $51,214.
  • Certification Training paid by Southside Regional Jail
  • There are rotating Day and Night Shifts. Work Schedule - 12 hour shifts
  • 13 workdays and 1 paid Holiday per 28 day cycle.
  • Annual leave and Sick leave accrued at 12 hours for each 28 day cycle.
  • Paid employee health insurance; dependent coverage available at employee's expense.
  • Retirement provided through Virginia Retirement System (VRS) with Law Enforcement Officers Supplement (LEOS). Employees are required to pay 5% of their monthly salary towards VRS retirement, Southside Regional Jail pays the rest.
  • A physical exam is required on all new employees. Pre-employment drug testing is required with random drug testing throughout employment.
  • Criminal Records and Driver's License Records will be checked on all new employees. All employees must have and maintain a valid Driver's license.
  • All Southside Regional Jail employees must have and maintain a working telephone. A cellular telephone satisfies this requirement.

Jail Officer
Starting Salary $51,214- Uncertified or $56,045- Certified
DCJS certification preferred but not required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, pass a background check and drug screening, possess an operator's license valid in the state of Virginia and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Major/Chief of Operations 
Starting pay for the position is $92,176 Annually.
The Chief of Operations performs professional and administrative work with the goal of assuring Southside Regional Jail Authority compliance with the Board of Corrections (BOC) minimum Standards for Jails.  The Chief of Operations directs and supervises the facility. He/she is responsible for the overall administration and operation of all areas within the facility and its boundaries. He/she plans, directs, assigns and coordinates all program activities and support services of the facility as well as plans, organizes and directs activities to assure adherence to Southside Regional Jail Authority policies and procedures.

The Minimum Qualifications to be considered for this position are:
-Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in penology, psychology or related field;
-Minimum three (3) year’s experience (at a supervisory level) in correctional operations with a public, private or military agency or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements;
-Extensive experience in correctional institution management including considerable supervisory experience.
